At the Hands AGM on 14th July 2010, two significant changes took place.

The first was a change of name for the organisation to Hands Rochester Volunteer Centre. This change reflects our membership of and accreditation with Volunteering England. It is also a more up to date name, and shows that the organisation is a modern, progressive one.

The second was to the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees. After eight successful years, Alan Street stepped down as Chairperson. Our thanks go to Alan for all his hard work and support.

The new Chairperson is Dan McDonald, who is also chief executive of Chatham Citizen's Advice. We welcome Dan to the new role and look forward to working with him.

Hands Rochester Volunteer Bureau Lunch Club 25th Anniversary Celebrations held on 3rd November 2009
On Tuesday 3rd November the Mayor of Medway, Councillor David Royle, attended the 25th Anniversary celebratory lunch at the Hands Rochester Volunteer Bureau Lunch Club to meet some of the volunteers and club members.
The Mayor joined us in thanking the volunteers for all their hard work as well as celebrating the success of the Lunch Club over the past 25 years. During this time we have had the support of Anchor Housing in providing the venue, for which we are very grateful. Pictured is volunteer, Mary, who has been helping out at the Lunch Club for a little over 14 years. Also pictured are some of our Trustees who attended on the day to give the usual volunteers a break from the serving and washing up.
Bureau Manager, Jane Legg, said “We were delighted the Mayor was able to attend to help us celebrate and to thank our team of volunteer helpers. For many of the club members the social outing is very important and our volunteers work very hard to ensure they have an enjoyable time. We have a very dedicated team of 5 regular volunteers who work hard to create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for our clients at this fortnightly club. We also have volunteer drivers who regularly take and collect some of our less mobile clients to the Lunch Club. In addition to this the volunteers also help fundraise throughout the year to ensure the Christmas party can be provided at no extra cost.

 AGM & 40th Anniv Celebrations

On Saturday 13th June Hands Rochester Volunteer Bureau celebrated its 40th Anniversary after holding the AGM in St Peters Church, Delce Road, Rochester.

Also in attendance was local MP Jonathan Shaw who, after the official business of the AGM, presented some of the volunteers, who give their time each week to help run the valuable services to the community, with certificates in this the 25th year of Volunteers’ Week. Volunteers Week is held each year from 1st-7th June and is about rewarding, recognising and recruiting volunteers.

Alan Street, Chairman of Hands, said “thank you to all – whether you are volunteers, trustees or staff for your commitment your support and your assistance. Long may it continue”.

A special presentation was made to long standing volunteer, Elaine Carlsen, who has been volunteering with Hands since it began in 1969.

Alan Street, Chairman, said “As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the charity we also pay tribute to a remarkable lady who has served Hands since its birth in 1969 as a driver, office volunteer, trustee and probably in many other roles. Elaine has worked tirelessly for Hands – congratulations and thank you from everyone, past and present, for your support.”
